Discover Our Stylish Glass Rooflights & Skylights

Installing a rooflight or glass skylight is one of the most effective ways to transform your space with enhanced natural light. Favoured by architects and interior designers, roof glazing is now a popular choice for homeowners and business owners looking to boost natural light levels and their property value at the same time.

Whether you're working on a flat-roof extension, a modern new-build, or a commercial renovation, the right rooflight can bring a range of benefits.

What are the advantages of installing a fixed glass roof light?

  • Brightening interiors by introducing more natural light to rooms on upper floors and spaces with regular foot traffic, such as hallways and stairwells.
  • Improving energy efficiency and the overall atmosphere of your building.
  • Boosting ventilation and air flow, allowing homeowners to vent hot, humid air, improving air quality, and temperature regulation.
  • Increasing the value of the property, as skylights are considered striking, high-value architectural features.
  • Aiding with metal health and wellbeing, helping to regulate circadian rhythms due to increased exposure to natural light, which can improve sleep quality, boost serotonin, and reduce stress.

At EGW, we specialise in a premium range of flat glass rooflights and pyramid rooflights, carefully selected for their build quality, performance, and contemporary design. Our current range features high-performance products from trusted UK manufacturer Brett Martin, with plans to expand our offering as new solutions become available.

Fixed, Manual, & Electric Glass Roof Lights

Our range includes flat glass rooflights in fixed, manual opening, and electric opening variations. These are ideal for flat roofs where a sleek, flush finish is preferred – making them perfect for kitchen extensions, orangeries, and residential loft conversions, so you can see the sky year-round.

All models deliver excellent thermal performance, are highly secure, and are built with laminated and toughened glass to enhance their strength and energy efficiency. Black or grey powder-coated aluminium frames are available to blend in with your roof.

Our selection of fixed and opening roof lights includes:

Flat Glass Rooflights

  • For spaces where light is a priority, without the need for ventilation.
  • Fixed flat glass rooflights are non-opening units with a minimalist, low-profile frame.
  • Allows more natural light to spread through the area.
  • You won’t need to remember to close the window!

Raised Roof Lanterns

  • A striking design feature, perfect for atriums, stairwells, and larger open spaces with minimal external light sources.
  • Raised glazing structure allows maximum light.
  • Multi-faceted design also aids water run-off and helps to prevent debris build-up.

Manual Opening Rooflights

  • Ideal for rooms that would benefit from fresh air and passive ventilation without fuss.
  • Smooth manual opening is controlled via an integrated winding mechanism and pole.
  • Comes with all the necessary fixings, including a 1m long operating rod to control the worm gear handle.

Electric Opening Rooflights

  • Providing convenience at your fingertips, these mains-powered flat glass rooflights have electric hinges powered with either a wall switch or remote control.
  • Compatible with automatic rain sensors (recommended) to keep your interiors dry in changing weather.

Should I choose a manual or electric glass roof light?

Whether a manual or electric glass sky light would be better for your property depends on how often it will be used, where it’s installed, and how much you are looking to spend.

Generally speaking, if you are looking to save money and can easily access the skylight, a manual option should be fine. For hard-to-reach areas, an electric rooflight will make things much easier.

Feel free to compare the pros and cons below to help you decide:

Manual Glass Skylight

Electric Glass Rooflight

Cons:

·       Less convenient opening procedure

·       Not suitable for hard-to-reach areas

·       More time-consuming, complex installation

·       Higher initial investment

·       May require more maintenance

Pros:

·       Lower upfront cost

·       Simpler installation

·       Ideal for hard-to-reach areas or very frequent use

·       Automatic or low-effort operation via switches or a remote

Rooflight & Skylight FAQs

What's the difference between a rooflight and a skylight?

These terms are often used interchangeably. Technically, “rooflight” is more common in the UK construction industry, especially for flat roofs, while “skylight” is often used more generally by customers in reference to flat roof windows.

At EGW, we use both terms to ensure we reach all customers looking for roof windows.

The term “roof lantern” refers to a different, specific style of roof window that creates a raised pyramid structure instead of a flat skylight. They all let in more light, but different roof windows will have different installation styles depending on their shape and design.

If you have any questions about raised or flat glass rooflights, simply ask our team for more information.

Can I install a rooflight on a pitched roof?

Our current range is designed for flat roofs. However, some models may be suitable for low-pitch applications (between 2° and 15°).

Each product page has detailed information about the design specs and instructions for easier product selection and installation.

Please check the product specifications to make sure the design and measurements match up with your planned installation. As all roof windows are made to order, they are not returnable and we cannot offer a refund if you order the wrong size or type.

If you need help with your setup, you can contact us for advice on choosing a product to suit the same orientation as your roof.

Do you offer rooflights with kerbs?

Yes. Many of our models are available with or without upstands (kerbs). You’ll find this information clearly listed on each product page.

While several options are designed to be installed on an existing builder’s kerb, other designs come with a PVC kerb included that can be mounted directly on a flat roof. These include fixed, manually opening, and electric opening flat roof windows.

When you order your rooflight, double-check the kerb measurements to ensure it will fit where you plan to install it. Our team is on hand to offer guidance if you need to contact us by phone or email for advice on our rooflights with kerbs.

Are the rooflights thermally broken?

Absolutely. All our rooflights are designed with energy efficiency in mind and include thermally broken aluminium frames to minimise heat loss.

This means frameless glazing typically isn’t possible, because new rooflights must have thermally broken frames to maintain a U value of at least 1.4 W/m²K.

Our laminated glass rooflights have a centre pane U value of 1.1 W/m²K – the lower the number, the better the insulation, ensuring effective heat control.

Can I request a bespoke size or shape?

Yes, we offer custom rooflight sizes on request. Just get in touch with our team and we’ll help you order exactly what you need for your project.

Whether you need a:

  • Flat roof skylight
  • Pitched roof window
  • Or pyramid window

You can enquire about custom sizes to receive a bespoke quote. Our range only includes double glazing with aluminium frames – we do not offer frameless or triple glazed glass options.

However, if you need a bespoke piece of flat glass for a roof window, you can still speak to our team to see what we can do for you.

Do I need planning permission for flat glass rooflights?

In England and Wales, safety glass skylights are generally permitted developments if the rooflight doesn’t project more than 150mm from the roof slope and no part of it is higher than the tallest part of the roof.

There are other conditions that might apply to flat skylights, including the location and whether you’re creating a roof terrace, so it’s worth checking with your local authority if you aren’t sure about needing approval for fixed or opening rooflights.

Whichever type of rooflight you want to use, it’s also important to make sure the design and installation complies with UK building regulations. This includes efficient drainage, insulation, load support, and fire safety provisions.

Whether you’re installing it yourself or hiring builders for professional fitting, it’s your responsibility to confirm the window is fitted correctly and safely.

How to clean my glass sky light?

How you clean your glass roof light depends on how accessible it is.

For accessible lights:

  • Wipe with warm soapy water or mild glass cleaner
  • Use a soft cloth or squeegee

For inaccessible lights:

  • Use an extendable pole if inside or on ground levels
  • Consider professional cleaning for very high units

Either way, we recommend cleaning every 3 – 6 months on (less sunny days, where possible to avoid streaks) and don’t encourage the use of abrasive products or pressure washers, which could damage the window.
