Table Top FAQs
How can you use a glass table top?
There are two main ways to use a glass table top. As a sheet of toughened glass cut to size, you can either use it as the top of a table itself, set within a frame or on top of a base, or as a glass table topper – laying it over an existing table top to improve it.
If you need to replace a broken glass table top, ordering a custom replacement to fit the dimensions of your table is easy with us. Or, if you’re trying to upcycle an older table or piece of furniture, adding a glass top can quickly transform it into a new design.
They’re not just limited to classic coffee tables and dining tables – you can also use our toughened glass toppers for worktops, sideboards, desks, and more. This material is ideal for adding a layer of strength and protection to preserve wooden surfaces.

Can I order a custom glass table top?
Yes – while we offer several shapes and sizes of glass table top in our online store, we recognise that all tables are different, and we want to help you achieve the exact look and function that you’re hoping for with a bespoke toughened glass table top.
That’s why Express Glass Warehouse can offer a range of extended options on request – if you get in touch and provide details of the specifications you’re looking for, we can provide you with a tailored quote for the custom options that we can fulfil for you.
For example, you might want a different edge or corner finish, pre-drilled holes for easy installation or cut-outs for a unique shape, or another type of glass instead of standard clear – such as low iron glass, satin frosted glass, or tinted glass in grey or bronze.
Just reach out to enquire, and we’ll see what we can do to design and manufacture a bespoke glass table top to meet your requirements.
What are the maximum dimensions for a glass table top?
Select a product from our collection of glass table tops and protective glass table toppers and click through to see the different sizes available to choose from in that style. You’ll find a range of options between the following sizes:
- Round or square table tops – 500mm x 500mm to 1000mm x 1000mm
- Rectangle table tops – 600mm x 800mm to 3,000mm x 1,200mm
Of course, if you want specific measurements that aren’t available to choose from here, you can always contact us to get a bespoke quote for a toughened glass table top with the measurements you need, and we’ll do our best to provide this for you.
Our glass table tops are either 6mm thick, which is the minimum recommended for table tops in this material, or 10mm thick, which is more suitable for larger tables that need a more expansive yet still strong sheet of glass to cover the surface area.
Again, if you would prefer a glass thickness that isn’t listed, just reach out to the EGW team and we’ll take a look at your custom order.
Are glass table tops easy to maintain?
Yes – a big advantage of using glass table tops is that they are a naturally resilient material, so they don’t stain easily. To keep the glass in good condition, all you have to do is wipe it clean when needed and avoid placing hot objects directly on the surface (for example, using coasters for mugs and placemats for plates, etc.).
While toughened glass is scratch-resistant and heat-resistant to an extent and generally won’t break, you should still avoid damaging the surface and ruining the clarity and aesthetic appeal of the glass top. This also means keeping pets with sharp claws off the table and not writing on paper laid directly on the table surface.
When it comes to cleaning a glass table top, it’s a simple and relatively quick process, with no specialist materials required. All you need is some warm soapy water and a clean soft cloth to wipe away any dust, debris, and marks – then a dry soft cloth to polish it dry and buff away any lingering smudges, like fingerprints.
Are glass table tops safe around pets or children?
Made from tempered safety glass, toughened glass table tops are much stronger than standard glass, so they don’t break easily. They are reinforced through rapid heating and cooling that changes the internal stresses, strengthening the layer structure – so even if the glass does shatter from a very hard impact, it will break into blunt little pieces.
This means that as long as the table is located in a sensible position where people are unlikely to fall onto it, and little ones and pets are prevented from climbing on top of it, the glass table top should be completely safe. The edges will also be polished, and you can make a special request for more rounded corners if you would prefer.
Whenever very young children are in a household, it’s usually a good idea to ‘babyproof’ furniture with products like rubber bumpers and corner protectors until they’re big enough to avoid bumping into the edges. You may still prefer to do this temporarily to protect both children and the table top from impacts.
Why are glass table tops the best option?
Wondering why you should choose glass over another table top material? The real question is: why wouldn’t you use glass table tops when there are so many benefits? The many advantages of using glass as a table top or table top protector include:
Durability – Able to withstand everyday life activities without scratching or staining easily, toughened glass is resilient enough to give your table extended longevity.
Low-maintenance – As we’ve covered above, toughened glass surfaces are easy to maintain and keep clean without much effort, so they look great for longer.
Sleek appearance – Glass has an elegantly modern look that elevates its surroundings, spreading and reflecting light so the space feels bright and open.
Versatile style – As a surprisingly minimalist material, glass works with almost any other element you may want to pair it with, complementing all kinds of interiors.
Customisable – With an experienced supplier like EGW, you can request glass cut to size using our standard dimensions or contact us for a bespoke quote.
